Why We Walk

We walk for George — and for everyone like him who deserves to live, and die, with dignity, joy, and love.

George Horvat was more than a beloved member of the Nanaimo community — he was a light, a rhythm, a reason to smile. He loved to dance. He never missed the Blues Festival. He made friends wherever he went, offering warmth, mischief, and pure delight. When you were with George, you felt joy in motion.

He was supported throughout his life by organizations like NACL, Clay Tree, NSL, and CLBC — and in his final chapter, by HHA Death Doula Maleah Bajich and a loving circle of family and community. Team Butterfly walks to ensure that others like George — individuals with developmental disabilities — receive the same kind of compassionate, inclusive end-of-life care that made his final days rich with meaning and surrounded by love.

The butterfly, one of George’s favourite symbols, reminds us that transformation is possible — even in grief. Even at the end. As we walk, we carry George’s legacy forward with every step.

“George was joy in motion. Walking in his memory means helping others live and die with the same dignity and love he gave so freely.”
